"Photographer duo, Zoren Gold and Minori, have started their collaboration in 2000. Their shared curiosity of mixing each of their different skills took them on a journey of discovering the new venue of photographic image-making. Their approach to photography is not only about capturing the moment of physical reality, but it is to unveil their freedom of individual/alternative reality. The fascination of what is possible in image-making has lead them to experiment with improvising different mediums as well as keeping the spontaneity to unlock their fantasy."

_________________________________________________________________________________________

A very interesting colloquium held in Paris at the Jeu de Paume.

Colloque "Photo / Graphisme"
******************************
le samedi 20 octobre 2007 de 9h30 à 17h00
auditorium Concorde
******************************

Dear All

I would like to invite you for my first solo exhibition in Europe, called "A Bag of Grease".
The show starts Friday June 8th at the great gallery Vallery in Barcelona, Spain.
On display will be a line of especially made big-format posters, the latest line of my own It's Our Thing (together with Matthias at Sweatshop Union) t-shirt/sweatshirt label and those items will also be available to buy in a limited quantity.

"A Bag of Grease" is a collection of works celebrating influences I've carried with me for a long time and in Barcelona they come to life through the posters, t-shirts/sweatshirts, walldrawings and some three-dimensional objects. For you who not know my works too well a collection of older works from the past two years will also be shown. See attached press text for more info.
My aim with this exhibition is not to get a single concept through, the way I work have the last few years been fueled by a restlessness and I've been jumping from making t-shirts to stationary and logos to exhibitions and airbrush-emulations. All this will be well represented in Barcelona, but bigger and better.

ªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªª

_________________________________________________________________________________________
Ah ugliness! So attractive... What was the deal with designers and hands anyway...

The 'baseball' couch was designed by De Pas, D'Urbino et Lomazzi and was called Di Maggio in homage to the famous baseballer Joe di Maggio. The overall design reminds me of the pseudo anti-conformism and anti-conventionnal aspect of the pop 70s.

Some design can be beautifully ugly. Afterall everything is a matter of taste...Dada chair by Enzo Berti.
"Dada has, as its inspiration, the artistic and literary movement founded in 1916 in Zurich by the Romanian poet Tristan Tzara. Dadaism stood as the negation of all rational and received ideas. Instead, it celebrated the act that is gratuitous and arbitrary.

In one of BureaudeBank pics one prolly recognized the famous Universale chair. This chair was a gift from Joe Colombo to Roberto Crippa. Both artists lived in Milan and studied at the Brera Academy.
They were part of different art groups as Joe Colombo was a member of "Art Nuclear" and Roberto Crippa "Spazialismo," however they knew each other and had mutual friends such as Fontana and Matta. The Vitra Design Museum recently made a complete retrospective of Colombo's retro-futuristic work. Worth checking it again.

Label Architecture curated the Belgian Pavilion at the Xth Architecture Biennale in Venice. Their show is called La Beauté Ordinaire (Ordinary Beauty) and looks at the infra-ordinary in Belgian landscapes. PleaseLetMeDesign worked on the catalogue and it's gutgood. The idea, as mentionned on Renaud Huberlant's blog, was to create a pocket size catalogue to emphasize the big amount of texts. Is it a trend but the recent catalogue for the Design Products Department at the Royal College (designed by Jonathan Hares) and the catalogue for the Comédie Theater in Clermont (designed by Antoine&Manuel) also use the pocket size (11x17cm approx.).

HELLO SIMILARITIES

barque-dante.jpg

10525.jpg

anatomyofhell.jpg
_________________________________________________________________________________________
Catherine Breillat's Anatomie de l'Enfer (Anatomy of Hell) bares some similitudes with Eugene Delacroix's La Barque de Dante. Look at how the image on the movie poster is an echo to the corpses of the damned trying desesperatly to assault the dinky boat of Dante and Virgilio floating on the Styx. As if they too were doomed.
Visually, the poster is also an echo to the Rubenian way of 'color-coding' bodies. Pale for the female and dark for the male. Strong muscular bodies similar to the terribilita of MichelAngelo.
Delacroix was inspired and copied the masters at the Louvre. Breillat does a bit the same. It's not plain stupid carbon-copy, it's something else. I hope. I'm sure.

Malle must have been a big afficionado of Ethno-Cineast Jean Rouch. Rouch was the theorician of the "Ciné-Transe" method. Back in the 60s when filmakers were able to hold the camera on their shoulder and record the sound in synchronization (la synchrone), Rouch coined (along with sociologist Edgar Morin) the word "Cinéma-Réalité". In the movie Chronique d'un été Rouch and Morin went to interview Parisians during a hot summer. The real-reality of the dialogues, the camera-doesn't-lie aspect of the film was a wake-up call to a lot of filmakers.
The camera sees the world not only through the eyes of the cameraman but through the ones who are filmed. The aperture simply being an extension in the most objectif sense of the term.

Time to rediscover the work of movie director Louis Malle. If the French Nouvelle Vague was a family, Malle would have been a distant cousin, more interested in running his own adventures than following in the footsteps of the Politiques des Auteurs. A magnificent story-teller, LM is also a great documentarist (if the word exists in English!). He directed some very fresh documentaries on various subjects; the Mystery of India, the Ethos and Mythology of the Tour de France and of course his famous World of Silence which depicted the life of Commandant Cousteau and his crew but was more of an ode to Malle's love of the sea.
There is something uterly seductive and provocative in his films. Something Jean-Claude Carriere have described has the work of an Enlightened Child.

"The fashion label ®____fabrics interseason
was created by Wally Salner and Johannes Schweiger in 1998.
____fabrics interseason positions itself and its work within an international network of electronic music, fine arts and design. The conceptual working method reflects in extensive research to societal phenomena such as the rise of new poverty or a state of all-inclusive passivity. The idea is taken further including social and culturally constructed conventions of clothing and their identifying character e.g. the mourning dress or clothing standards as seen from a political feminist perspective. Furthermore ____fabrics interseason widens its notion of fashion and design with the in-house record label ego vacuum rec. and the electronic soundtrack releases as well as with conceptional projects and participations in exhibitions within the context of the arts."

Context: The International Biennale of Graphic Design in Brno, founded in 1963, is held every other year in Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic, The main organizers are the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and the Moravian Gallery in Brno, in the buildings of which the Biennale takes place. The Ministry gives a largest chunk of the money for the event, followed by some sponsor's contributions. It is one of the largest events of its kind, the volume of submissions for the competition part of the Biennale is usually about 5,000 works by several hundred designers, from virtually every continent. From these, items for exhibition are chosen by the selection committee. All of the accepted designs are displayed and the International Jury then awards the Grand prix, prize for the best work in each category, as well as other prizes. The main exhibition is accompanied by a number of associated events - this year, one of them being "Graphic design in the white cube" curated by Peter Bilak. As this small exhibition is very self-conscious about presenting imported graphic design to local public, the poster that you make should somehow reflect on the event itself.

Talking about Sci-Fi. Is Hollywood on the edge of making a 21st Century Barbarella? Apparently yes and E.T. buddy Drew Barrymore is on top of the list to do at least as good as Jane Fonda who first gave 'flesh' to Jean-Claude Forest's comics character Barbarella.
Now i wonder if the Orgasmatron is gonna make its comeback too? (first mentionned in Woddy Allen's 'Sleeper', the orgasmatron is a torture device invented by Dr Duran-Duran who also calls it the Excessive Machine.).

HELLO BIG STILL LIFE

_________________________________________________________________________________________
The exhibition Das grosse Stilleben (The Big Still Life) by Klaus Littmann features a department store in Mugron in southern France that has survived largely intact some 30 years after it was closed. Das grosse Stilleben is authentic to the minutest detail. Only a few perishable goods were newly added; everything else originates from the department store in Mugron. The installation sublimes the words of Andy Warhol, who remarked in 1985: "Lock up a department store today, open the door after a hundred years and you will have a Museum of Modern Art."

'Cone Clock'
A typical clock consists of a box with a graphical time scale at the front. Our impression of time is personal and subjective. As well as showing the time, clocks can give us identity. 'Cone Clock' is reduced to only the hour hand, and any flat surface becomes the face.

'Socket light'
A structure where you can 'plug' spotlights into any angle or direction. The cable becomes the structure of the lamp. It's a wire that you can plug lights into.

Roquebrune, France 1952: Le Corbusier’s Cabanon was completed, fusing rustic domesticity with high Modernist detailing at the site of his eventual, mysterious death. In New York, the same year, Jackson Pollock executed the last of his monumental action paintings: Blue Poles No.11.
Pittsburgh 1968: George. A Romero finished filming the first of his ‘Dead’ series. In Paris, Roland Barthes completed his seminal essay ‘The Death of The Author’.
These two moments provide a conceptual framework to the collaboration between Newbetter (Joshua Bolchover, Shumon Basar, Parag Sharma) and British Artist Neal Rock, for Rock’s second exhibition at f a projects. Newbetter’s constructed environment houses the filmic contrivances of Rock’s silicon painted sculptures in a tableaux that owes as much to Le Corbusier’s Cabanon as it does to the later fabrication of Sam Raimi’s ‘The Evil Dead’ gore-effects.

HELLO INVISIBLE CITIES

_________________________________________________________________________________________
IDEAL CITY - INVISIBLE CITIES

in Zamosc, Poland (18 June - 22 May 2006)
and in Potsdam, Germany (09 Sept - 22 Oct 2006)

Curated by Sabrina van der Ley and Markus Richter / European Art Projects
Commissioner: Anda Rottenberg, Adam Mickiewicz Institute

The project is dedicated to one of the outstanding cultural themes: The Ideal City and its sibling the Invisible City. Forty artists comment and reflect on this idea in two European cities, Zamosc, Poland and Potsdam, Germany, which today are still recognisable as ideal city plannings.

Since the renaissance, visual artists have been intensely interested in the concept of the Ideal City, even though most of them remained unrealised, invisible cities. This continues until Constant’s “New Babylon” and the projects of the Archigram group in the 1960s. In the last 25 years, however, this idea no longer played a noteworthy role in artistic discourse although many artists deal with the thematic field of space/house/city in their works. The general absence of utopian thinking in the political realm and society seems to be also manifest in art.

The idea of the Ideal City was always closely tied to the question of how a society should best be set up. The physical shape of the city often developed parallel to political-social utopias. The hesitation about the theme of the “Ideal City” is also based in the suspicion of totalitarianism under which utopias in general meanwhile stand. Following geometrical regularities, usually planned in the form of orthogonal grids, ideal cities were regarded as a sign and _expression of rationality. The use of the grid for city layouts often found its continuation in the individual buildings, whose facades and forms varied similar basic modules.

Today, the fascination exerted by the idea of the ideal city is primarily aesthetic. But the strict grid and rational structure are not exhausted in the charm of the surface; the utopian spirit beneath it is palpable – including its ominousness. Especially today, when the discourse about form and development of urban space is governed by current themes like the ‘Megalopolis’ or ‘Shrinking Cities’, it seems necessary to give the concept of the Ideal City a fresh glance while also searching for traces of the many invisible cities.

SNAP JUDGMENTS: NEW POSITIONS IN CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN PHOTOGRAPHY

Photography has maintained a vital presence in African culture for over a century. But the recognition of African photographers and their unique visual language has come about only recently. When Western photography engages Africa, it seems often to evoke pathological images of disease, corruption, and poverty. The global media almost never depict contemporary Africans in ordinary situations; images of crisis frequently eclipse other representations. In response to this partial view that overlooks the complexities of daily life across a vast continent of over fifty nations, 'Snap Judgments: New Positions in Contemporary African Photography' forces a recognition of the contradictory and varied forms of photographic practice that are now arising across Africa.
The curator Okwui Enwezor is Dean of Academic Affairs at San Francisco Art Institute, and Artistic Director of Bienal Internacional de Arte Contemporaneo de Sevilla, in Seville, Spain. He was artistic Director of Documenta 11, Kassel, Germany (2002) and the 2nd Johannesburg Biennale (1997). Enwezor has curated numerous exhibitions including: The Short Century: Independence and Liberation Movements in Africa, 1945-1994; In-Sight: African Photographers, 1940-Present; and Global Conceptualism. He has joined the International Center of Photography as an adjunct curator.

[text © Sabine Modder] Singapore designer Jason Ong wants us to look outward towards projecting and achieving happiness with his Chair for Day Dreamers. Perched far above the madding crowds, one can reflect in peace and quiet. Basing his design on the typical lifeguard chair, Ong removed the hind legs to create tension, with the goal of having the ascension be a leap of faith. Another interesting detail is the increased height of the first step the first bold step in chasing a dream. Also of note are Ongs Void Series of fiberglass chairs. All very relaxing
